Basic Military Training

Purpose

BMT Foundation
All enlisted Airmen are trained in the fundamental skills necessary to be successful in the USAF.

Scale of BMT

7+ Million BMT Trainees
More than seven million young men and women have entered USAF basic military training.

Phases of BMT

BMT Bookends
Basic military training begins with the receiving phase (zero week) and ends with graduation.

MTI Role

Military training instructors (MTIs) are responsible for most of the training that takes place, and they accompany trainees throughout the training process.

After BMT

Following graduation, all Airmen proceed to:

  • The appropriate technical training school, or
  • Their first duty assignment
Technical Training Length
Technical training typically lasts anywhere from one month to two years, depending on the Airman's assigned Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC).
