The Future Years Defense Program (FYDP) is a database that summarizes:
- Forces
- Resources
- Equipment
…associated with all Department of Defense programs.
Three Basic Dimensions
FYDP Three Dimensions
The program displays total Department of Defense resources and force structure information in three basic dimensions:
- Organizations affected — military departments and defense agencies
- Appropriations accounts — research, development, test, and evaluation; and operation and maintenance
- Major force programs — strategic forces and mobility forces
Update Cadence
FYDP Twice Per Cycle
The FYDP is updated twice during the PPBE Process cycle:
- First, upon submission of the POM — usually July/August
- Again, upon submission of the U.S. President's budget — early February the following year

FYDP Numbers
The FYDP is composed of:
- 11 major force programs
- Over 3,600 active program elements
FYDP Purpose
These are designed to categorize functional or organizational entities and their related resources.
